It seems though that we're close to finding a biological match for immortality...in the video one expert even states that he believes this is the generation that we'll figure it out- just thought it was interesting the thought process because no one really thinks this stuff is possible.

I ask -- Why the hell would you want to?

What if youth, health and fertility were part of the deal LW? What if you could be a great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother? You would be the head of a hundred or more descendents. Think of the status you would have. Death is only something you look forward to when you’re miserable. When you’re healthy it’s one day at a time, you think, I’m alive and healthy today I can’t wait for tomorrow you never get tired of good quality life.

Even Christians rally for scientific cures for death causing diseases. Why do they struggle at all against death if its part of Gods plans for us? There is no difference between saving a life and extending a life. In the Bible people lived eight, nine hundred years, certainly God is not opposed to us living longer. Right now we have more brains than are available to us. Maybe the only way to use the rest of our brains is to live longer. If death is a truth that cannot be avoided by man, any attempt will always fall short. If the death of the physical were truly Gods plan for us surely he’d find a way to make it happen, despite our mortal efforts.

Right now we can’t stop aging, but we will soon be able to repair the damage as it occurs. Just like with enough care we can keep an antique car in perfect working condition indefinitely.

Yeah, but if you're driving an antique car, the care involves replacement parts, does it not? If all the parts are replaced, is it still the same car?

I still wouldn't want to live forever. Not here, at least. I'm already bored half to death, I don't like the assholes I share this planet with, and the endless tedium and abscence of challenge would drive people mad. (have you read no vampire books at all? lol)

Besides, we'd very quickly run out of room and resources for all these extra people, which would lead to endless wars where nobody dies but everyone suffers.

Nope. You can keep your immortality. Death is a natural part of life, it makes room for new things, and life is ONLY precious because it's so fleeting.

Maybe you’re bored because you have a feeling of futility and that everything is downhill from here until you die. Having the opportunity for your life to go in several completely different directions might peak your interest. Even now it would now it would take several thousand years to explore all that life has to offer. And I think there being lots of older and wiser souls around should reduce the asshole concentration.

There will always be the possibility of death by accident, so we would still have to deal with that. The notion that mortality gives life all it’s meaning however is ridiculous. It’s nothing more than our psyche trying to deal with what we think we have no control over. The awareness of our own mortality is mostly a big load that brings us down. We think after we miss opportunities they will never come again in our lifetime so we give up on them. Being able to explore many roads without the fear that if you take to many wrong ones you’ll not have time to find the one you should be on would be a whole new freedom.

Population is an issue, but it’s an issue that we will have to deal will regardless. We’re going to at least have the option of living a thousand years or more very soon, this is going to happen. It’s just something else we’re going to have to deal with.

If you have always felt you needed freedom from existence then you’re suffering from clinical depression, just like Sylvia Plath. And that’s a disease that they can cure in this hypothetical. Your pro-life stance would certainly suggest you think life is worth it.

Living longer will take considerable effort, with lengthy therapies and hospital stays, all very expensive a certainly optional so you could always opt out if you want. The other 100,000 that die every day from old age would gladly take more quality life if given the chance.
